State Representative Demetrius Newton has died. Newton was a civil rights attorney who represented icons like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. before becoming the first black person to serve as Speaker Pro Tem of the Alabama House. He was 85-years-old.
Birmingham attorney Mark White says Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard has hired him to go after people accused of libeling him. Hubbard's business, Auburn Network, recently canceled a consulting contract with Southeast Alabama Gas District, which financed his trip to Paris this year. AL.com reported the contract was approved by the state Ethics Commission.
The Loveless Academic Magnet Program announced Wednesday nine of its students have been chosen as National Merit Scholar Semifinalists. The students qualified based on their Pre SAT scores and other academic standards. The students must submit an application, an essay and a letter of recommendation by the September 20th deadline to be considered as a finalist.
