WVAS to host Real Help for Real Heroes

Veterans are invited to attend this evening's "Real Help for Real Heroes" event at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Montgomery.  WVAS-FM is sponsoring the jobs and benefits fair to assist veterans with their needs.  "Real Help for Real Heroes" is part of a months long initiative called Veterans Coming Home to highlight veterans-related issues.  The event starts at 5p.m. and concludes at 7 p.m.

Grave Desecrated

Montgomery Police are looking for the person or persons who desecrated the grave sit of slain rap artist, Glenn Doe B Thomas. Operators at Greenwood Cemetery on Lincoln Road reported that a small hole, about a foot and a half, was dug at the rapper's grave site sometime on Monday.  Police said the culprit left a shovel behind.  Glenn Thomas was shot to death inside the former Centennial Hill bar and Grill in late December.  Two men were charged with capital murder.

MPS School Board Meeting

Tempers flared at Tuesday night's meeting of the Montgomery County School Board prompting security guards to remove two individuals from the session.  During a public speaking period, activist K.T. Brown protested the lack of a school crossing guard at Morris Elementary School.  Another activist Faya Rose Toure of Selma, urged school board members to consider renaming Robert E. Lee High School.  Toure said the Confederate generals' legacy is linked to slavery.  Another speaker and future member of the school board, Dr. Lesa Keith accused the school board of failing to remove teachers and administrators who were implicated in a grade changing scandal at MPS schools.

Fighting Prison Release

A west Alabama prosecutor says he is optimistic that two men sentenced to prison for their roles in a series of church fire in 2006 won't leave prison early. District Attorney Michael Jackson says Bibb County Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins was wrong to issue an order that would allow Benjamin Moseley and Matthew Cloyd an early release.  Jackson said he's confident that judges in Green and Pickens counties will not issue similar orders.  The string of arson fires in 2006 destroyed or badly damaged churches in Bibb, Sumter, Greene and Pickens counties.

Domestic Violence Vigil

Alabama first lady Dianne Bentley is leading a candlelight vigil at the state Capitol to bring attention to victims of domestic violence.  A spokeswoman for the governor's office says Governor Bentley will also attend the vigil tonight at 7:30 p.m.  He will present a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence says more than 20,000 domestic violence cases were reported in 2013.
