Thousands Honor Historic Anniversary

Thousands of people form all backgrounds and races descended on the Alabama Capitol Wednesday afternoon.  The crowd estimated at 3,000 or more gathered at the Capitol steps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the final leg of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March.  The marchers, escorted by dozens of Montgomery police officers on motorcycles, retraced the final three mile route from Saint Jude Catholic Church on Dexter Avenue.  The huge crowd heard remarks from dozens of elected officials.  The keynote address delivered by the Reverend Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Peggy Wallace Kennedy, daughter of former Governor George Wallace.  

Stabbing Investigation

A stabbing at a residence on East Street is under investigation by Montgomery Police.  Authorities say an adult male was taken to a local hospital with what was described as a life threatening injury.  Montgomery Police said a suspect was arrested and charges are pending.  Police said the stabbing on East Street happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.  

Jackson Release

Former Chicago Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is expected to leave a federal prison camp in Montgomery Thursday, 18 months after going in following his guilty plea to illegally spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds on personal items.  The 50-year-old Jackson will serve the remainder of his sentence at a Washington, D.C., halfway house.  

ASU Forum

A forum to examine the nation's criminal justice system and youth empowerment initiatives was held Wednesday on the campus of Alabama State.  Bishop Harry Jackson says reforms are needed in light of highly publicized incidents involving police and black citizens.  The forum also featured ASU President Gwendolyn Boyd, Judges Johnny Hardwick, Bob Armstrong and Montgomery County Commission Chairman Elton Dean.
