Robbery Arrest

Prattville Police say a suspect is in custody charged in connection with a strong arm robbery that occurred outside a Prattville Wal-Mart store on January 30th.  Prattville authorities and CrimeStoppers say numerous tips led to apprehension of 30-year-old Charles Jones of Montgomery.  He was arrested Monday by the Montgomery Police Department.  Jones is accused of robbing a young couple of their tax refund check.

Magnet Changes

The Montgomery Public School System has made changes to its application process for magnet schools.  MPS Superintendent Margaret Allen said the process was changed to comply with federal education guidelines.  There is now one application for each level, elementary, middle and high schools.  Magnet applications will be processed at the Central Office on Decatur Street rather than at the school.  School officials say testing is only being used for new applicants for kindergarten and first grade.  And, interested students will be required to audition at the Arts magnet schools.  MPS officials say magnet applications will be accepted through March 20th.

Smoking Ordinance

A much talked about proposed smoking ordinance for Montgomery is on the agenda at this evening's Montgomery City Council meeting.  The anti-smoking proposal pushed by District 5 Councilman C.C. Calhoun already has undergone several revisions.  Calhoun tells the Advertiser Newspaper that he does not have the votes needed to approve the ordinance.  The proposal would ban smoking in public places in Montgomery.  Calhoun said its likely he will ask the city council to send it back to a committee for additional review.
