New South members struggle with endorsements
By New South Coalition undecided in Demo race for Ala governor
Montgomery, AL – - Two leaders of the Alabama New South
Coalition say U.S. Rep. Artur Davis appeared to be the front-runner
for the group's endorsement in the Democratic race for governor
until he became the only member of the Congressional Black Caucus
to vote against the federal health care bill.
Now President Robert Avery and President Emeritus Hank Sanders
say Saturday's endorsement meeting by the predominantly black
political group is too close to call. Davis' opponent, Agriculture
Commissioner Ron Sparks, favored the federal health care plan.
About 150 to 200 New South delegates are expected in Montgomery
to hear Davis and Sparks on Saturday. Then the delegates will vote
on an endorsement.
