Driving Program

An instructional driving program that demonstrates the dangers of drinking and driving is being expanded to high schools across Alabama.  Fatal Vision requires students to drive a small utility vehicle through a course lined with traffic cones while wearing special goggles that simulate the impaired vision of a drunk driver.  Public Information Officer for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Jamie Malloy says the simulation is proving to be effective.  The program began five years ago in Baldwin, Escambia and Monroe counties.  Through funding from the Alabama Farmers Federation, Fatal Vision is being taken statewide.

Sex Offender Conviction

A convicted sex offender was sentenced to 16 years in state prison Tuesday.  32-year-old Stephen Conrad of Tallassee received the prison term in Elmore County Circuit.  Conrad entered a plea deal and pleaded guilty to three counts of child sexual abuse.  Prosecutors said Conrad, who was arrested in June 2003, initially faced more than 100 abuse counts but the charges were dropped amid allegations that his confession was coerced.  Another defendant, Brandy Conrad, also pleaded guilty to child sex charges.  She is currently serving a 10 year sentence.  Elmore County District Attorney Randall Houston called the case one of the most notorious he's ever prosecuted.
