Montgomery Homicide Victim Identified

Montgomery Police have identified the man who was shot to death Sunday night outside a fast food restaurant.  Officers say 20-year-old Dundrell Young of Montgomery died of a gunshot wound at about 9:25 p.m. Young was shot dead in the parking lot of a Burger King in the 2200 block of East South Boulevard.  Detectives are investigating the motive and no arrests have been made.

Sentencing Date

Montgomery County prosecutors say a south Alabama man awaits sentencing in a 2013 murder case.  Ricky Padgett of Andalusia was convicted Friday in connection with the New Year's day 2013 stabbing death of a Montgomery man.  A Montgomery County jury found Padgett guilty of murder in the death of 21-year-old Danny Stroud.  Prosecutors said Stroud was stabbed during an argument over a woman.  Padgett, who has an extensive criminal history, will be sentenced on October 20th.

Traffic Related Deaths

State Troopers have identified the three people who were killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning near Millbrook.  The victims are 20-year-old Aeriel Bernstein, 21-year-old Savannah Huggins and 18-year-old Devon Gibbons, all of Millbrook.  Troopers said the three were passengers in a sport utility vehicle that crashed on Coosada Parkway, struck a tree and caught on fire at about 1:30 Saturday morning.  The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says the three were not using seat belts.  ALEA said the driver, 19-year-old Corey Wilson, also of Millbrook and another unidentified passenger were injured, their medical conditions were unavailable.  Troopers said alcohol and drugs may have been factors in Saturday's accident.

Whistleblower Lawsuit

A Montgomery County judge has ruled that an auto supplier can continue its lawsuit against a fired Alabama worker, saying that a federal order meant to protect whistleblowers doesn't apply.  The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Renosol Seating in Selma fired Kim King in March and filed a defamation suit against her.  King tried to deliver a letter to the plant's customer, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing, saying she feared a chemical used in the car seat-production process was making workers sick.  The U.S. Department of Labor later filed a separate case against Lear Corporation in federal court accusing Lear of whistleblower retaliation.  Circuit Judge William Shashy ruled last week that King's attempts to deliver the letter aren't necessarily protected by federal law.

ASU Contract Extension

Alabama State University President Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd was given a three year contract extension. Boyd's contract was extended by the ASU Trustee Board at a Friday meeting.  Trustee Chairman Locy Baker praised Dr. Boyd's efforts to move ASU forward.  Baker also announced that ASU retained its accreditation for the 2015-2016 academic year.
