Police have now identified the man fatally shot Thursday night in the 300 block of Columbia Avenue. Investigators say fire medics and police responded to the scene around 8:30 where they found 20-year-old Demetrius McGhee of Montgomery suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at a local hospital. No arrests have been made according to police. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the police department at (334) 625-2831.
Measles Cases Rise
With the number of measles cases on the rise in the United States, Alabama health officials are urging parents to make sure children are immunized against the disease. Dr. Karen Landers. a pediatrician and medical consultant for the State Department of Public Health Immunization Division, says measles should not be taken lightly. Alabama law requires that children be up to date on their vaccinations prior to attending school. Doctors recommend that a first dose of the vaccine be given at age 12 to 15 months, and then a second does when a child reaches 4 to 6 years.
Alabama's unemployment rate has risen for the third month. State Commerce Secretary Tom Surtees says April's rate of 6.9 percent is up from 6.7 percent in March. That's higher than the rate a year ago at 6.5 percent. Surtees says the rise in April is due in part to how unemployment figures are seasonally adjusted. Shelby County had the lowest unemployment rate at 4.2 percent and Wilcox County had the highest at 15.5 percent.
Rural Farmers LLC
The Fairview Farmers Market is steaming ahead despite earlier fears that it might close for good. In order to remain open many of the farmers who work there have formed an alliance called Rural Farmers LLC, in hopes to continue to operate and improve the market. The market's manger, Flora Brown has big plans for its future she hopes to have exercise classes, a gift and floral shop as well as a bakery featured at the market in the coming months.
