Lady Hornets Prepare for March Madness

The Lady Hornets basketball team will travel to Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday to take on Florida State.  The Alabama State University women's squad is a number 15 seed in the NCAA tournament.  ASU earned its first appearance in the tournament since 2003.  Students, alumni and supporters held a Welcome Home rally Monday afternoon for the Lady Hornets.  Connecticut, Notre Dame and South Carolina and Maryland are the top seeded teams in the Women's NCAA tournament.

Moore Charges

The son of Alabama's chief justice is facing drug charges.  Court records show 24-year-old Caleb Moore, the son of Chief Justice Roy Moore, was arrested Sunday in Troy and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Stay Refused

A federal judge in Mobile is not backing off her order to an Alabama probate judge that he must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.  U.S. District Judge Callie Granade refused yesterday to stay her order to Mobile County Probate Judge Don Davis.  In January, Granade ruled that Alabama's gay-marriage ban is unconstitutional and told Davis that he could not refuse licenses because of a couple's sexual orientation.  Davis has shut down all marriage-license operations in Mobile County altogether to avoid violating either court order.

Voter Fraud

Alabama's Secretary of State's Office  is joining forces with the State Attorney General's Office and Secretary of Law Enforcement to investigate and prosecute voter fraud and campaign finance violations.  John Merrill has announced the Alabama Election Fairness project.  He says a hotline and an email address has been set up to accept complaints.  Merrill said election-related complaints can be made at voterfraud@sos.alabama.gov or 1-800-274-VOTE (8683).
