Jury Selection Complete in Capital Murder Trial

Jury selection is complete in the high profile capital murder trial of a Montgomery man charged with killing three people and wounding three others at a party in 2012.  Opening statements are expected today in the trial of 24-year-old Desmonte Leonard.  Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Leonard.  He has pleaded not guilty.  His lawyers say the shooting was in self-defense.

Burglary Suspect

The Alabama State University Police Department needs your assistance in locating a burglary and theft suspect who is wanted for breaking into a dormitory on Monday.  CrimeStoppers of Central Alabama and ASU police ave posted a lookout for 28-year-old Corey Edward Webster.  Investigators have said that Webster has possibly altered his appearance by cutting his dreadlocks.  He is known to frequent the area of Grace Street in Montgomery.  If you know the whereabouts of Webster, please call ASU police or CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP.  Your information may lead to a cash reward.

Prison Release

Despite the objections from a central Alabama prosecutor, a Bibb County judge has decided that two men convicted of burning several Alabama churches in 2006 will be released from state prison early.  Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins reduced the sentences to time already served for 29-year-old Matthew Cloyd and 28-year-old Benjamin Moseley.  District Attorney Michael Jackson has called the early release, "a violation of justice" and said they should have served out their prison terms.  Cloyd and Moseley were convicted of setting fire to nine Alabama churches in 2006.  Five of those fires were in Bibb County.

Wellness Coalition

The Montgomery Area Community Wellness Coalition is the recipient of two federal grants, totaling more than $900,000 each.  The funds come from the Affordable Care Act and will be used to combat chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity.  Federal health officials say chronic diseases are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths among Americans each year.
