Governor Considers State Abortion Legislation

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has until mid-May to decide on legislation that could shutter two of the state's largest abortion providers.  The Republican-held House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill that would deny licenses to clinics within 2,000 feet of K-8 public schools, in addition to legislation banning a commonly used second trimester abortion procedure.  Proponents of the school proximity bill say it's a safeguard to keep schoolchildren away from the "disturbing" sight of anti-abortion protests outside of clinics. The American Civil Liberties Union, which vows to file suit against the legislation, says both bills are about "eliminating" abortion entirely.  If Bentley declines to sign off on the bills by May 14 they are dead.
