Downtown Alliance Seeks EPA Plume Deferral

The City of Montgomery has entered into an Alliance with the county, state and the Advertiser newspaper.  It's an effort to remove the Environmental Protection Agency's oversight of the so-called Capitol City Plume.  In 1993, the EPA found groundwater tainted with chemicals and petroleum products.  EPA's Administrator for the Southeast, Heather McTeer Toney, says the proposal requires the Alliance to oversee cleanup and repay EPA $2.6 million.  Mayor Todd Strange said the proposed agreement would prevent EPA from placing a section of the downtown district on a "Superfund" list.

Arrest Lead

Central Alabama CrimeStoppers says a tip provided by a local resident resulted in the arrest of a Montgomery fugitive wanted in connection with multiple theft cases.  CrimeStoppers director Tony Garrett said police arrested 25-year-old Matthew Taylor Wednesday morning.  Taylor had been wanted for 12 confirmed warrants issued by police and sheriff's departments in Montgomery, Prattville and Millbrook.  Authorities said Taylor is facing an array of charges related to a series of thefts from three separate retail outlets.  Taylor is also charged with domestic violence and contempt of court.

Strange Recusal

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange says he stepped aside from an investigation into House Speaker Mike Hubbard because his campaign used Hubbard's printing company.  The explanation was included in a court filing Wednesday in which Hubbard's defense continued to attack the qualifications of the prosecution team leading the case on behalf of Strange.
