Daniels in MPD Custody Under Hefty Bond

The driver wanted for ramming a car into an apartment building and killing a 6-year-old boy is now in the custody of Montgomery police.  28-year-old Juan Daniels was arrested March 5th in Gwinnett County, Georgia, by the U.S. Marshals Service.  He is being held on a $500,000 cash bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.  6-year-old Aiden Howard was visiting a relative on February 12th when the crash happened at the Plaza  at Centennial Hill Apartments.  Daniels is charged with capital murder for the boy's death and attempted murder charge for driving an SUV toward the apartment to harm another man.

Warrant Scam

The Montgomery Police Department is warning residents about an arrest warrant scam.  Con artists have created a fake caller ID, which allows them to call you and it gives the appearance the call is originating from local police, sheriff or other law enforcement agency.  The scammer will claim there is a warrant out for your arrest, but you only can pay the fine with a Western Union money gram; other wire transfer or pre-paid debit card.  Authorities also advise citizens to never give out their personal information on the phone.

New Board

The Alabama Senate has voted to create a new governing board to oversee the state's two year college system.  The bill would take oversight of the community college system away from the elected state school board and put it under the control of a new board appointed by the Governor Robert Bentley.  Senators approved the bill on a 27-5 vote.  The bill now moves to the Alabama House of Representatives.  Opposed lawmakers said the two-year college system should be controlled by an elected board.

New Officers

Montgomery has twenty-five new police officers.  All of them took the oath of office Thursday at City Hall.  The 25 men and women completed 18 weeks of training and is the first class to graduate since Police Chief Ernest Finely took over at MPD.  The new officers will be assigned to the Patrol division.
