Civil Rights Icon Amelia Boynton Robinson Dies at 104

Amelia Boynton Robinson, a civil rights activist who championed voting rights for blacks throughout her life, died Wednesday at age 104.  It was Robinson who invited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to participate in a voting rights march in Selma in 1965, then was nearly beat to death during the march, which came to be known as "Bloody Sunday."  Robinson also became the first black woman to run for Congress in Alabama.  Her son, Bruce Boynton, said she had been hospitalized after suffering multiple strokes and died Wednesday morning in Montgomery.

ASU President's Perspectives

In her weekly Perspectives talk, ASU President Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd announced Wednesday that the football rivalry between Alabama State University and Tuskegee University will be renewed in September 2017.  The Hornets-Golden Tigers Football game will be called the "Labor Day Classic."  The two schools have signed a four year contract.  All games will be played at ASU Stadium.

House Fire

Five people escaped injury early Wednesday morning when their home went up in flames in Montgomery.  Montgomery Fire Sgt. O.J. Whiting, a public information officer, said the blaze erupted at a residence in the 4600 block of Conti Lane.  Whiting said firefighters responded to the house fire shortly before 4 o'clock Wednesday morning.  The house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, how it started has not been determined.  No one was injured.
