City Council to Address Uber Operation

The Montgomery City Council will be revisiting the issue of whether to allow rideshare company Uber to operate in the city.  It is expected that the issue will be discussed at the council's next meeting on Tuesday.  The council has spoke about Uber in the past, but nothing has come to fruition due to uncertainty around ordinance requirements and ridesharing's effect on local cab companies.  Uber offers users the ability to hail a ride by using an app and a fleet of privately-owned cars driven by amateurs.  Mayor Todd Strange has voiced interest in the company, but said changes in the transportation ordinance would be required.

Court Funding

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore is urging the governor to release conditional funding for the court system, saying court employees have been treated unfairly by those that control the state's purse strings.  Moore, in a Dec. 9th letter, asked Gov. Robert Bentley to release the money if it becomes available.  The Alabama Legislature gave the court system level funding this year but also included a conditional appropriation, money that can be released if the state has it.  Moore said court employees have had one merit raise since 2008, while legislative and executive branch employees have gotten raises.  The chief justice said the court system is not being treated as a branch of government.  Budget chairmen said during the legislative session that they were doubtful any conditional funds would come through.

Camelia Bowl 2015

Ticket sales for the 2nd Annual Raycom Camelia Bowl have been strong this year.  The game is set to be played Saturday in Montgomery at Cramton Bowl.  Mayor Todd Strange says this year's contest is between Ohio and Appalachian State.  Strange says the economic impact on Montgomery from the Camelia Bowl is in the millions of dollars.  Kickoff is at 4:30 Saturday on ESPN.
