Burglary Suspect Fatally Shot in Confrontation

A confrontation turned deadly between a gun-toting burglary suspect and a Millbrook police officer.  Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson said the incident happened just before noon Monday outside a residence on Clearview Lane in the Civil Point subdivision.  The chief said one suspect was armed with a pistol and confronted an officer and gunfire was exchanged.  The male suspect was killed.  Millbrook said four other suspects in the attempted burglary were captured following a manhunt by several law enforcement agencies.  The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the inquiry because the fatal shooting involved a police officer.

Charter Schools

Alabama Republicans are gearing up for a major push for charter schools.  A bill on charter schools will be a top priority for Republicans in the legislative session that begins next week.  The proposal would allow up to 10 new charter schools in the state each year.  Democrats and the Alabama Education Association say they will oppose the bill.

Second Suspect

Tuskegee Police say a second suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting at a house party on January 10th that left several Tuskegee University students injured.  Macon County Sheriff Andre Brunson said 25-year-old Robert Reynolds turned himself in Monday.  Another suspect in the case, 22-year-old Rishod Fields, was arrested in late January and was charged with several counts of attempted murder.

Minimum Wage

A Selma legislator says it is time to raise the minimum wage in Alabama.  State Representative Darrio Melton says he will introduce a bill that would bump the hourly wage to $9.80.  The Democrat said Alabama is one of five states that do not have a state minimum wage.  The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25.  A similar bill was introduced last year, but died in an Alabama House committee.
