Bentley in Montgomery

Governor Robert Bentley and Democratic challenger Parker Griffith won't be speaking to the same audience at the same time, but they will be speaking on consecutive days.  Bentley is scheduled to address a convention of active and retired public employees today in downtown Montgomery, and then Griffith talks to the group Wednesday. 

School Clean-up

Officials with the Montgomery Public School System are taking proactive steps to prevent an outbreak of the Enterovirus D68.  MPS personnel used the Professional Development day to sanitize all common areas in schools across the district.  The steps taken Monday are a precaution, the virus has been reported in a dozen states across the county, including the Mobile area. 

Grade Changing

Two Montgomery educators implicated in a grade-changing scandals in 2012 at Montgomery Public Schools have reached agreements with the Alabama Department of Education.  According to the Montgomery Advertiser, Dr. Betty Cargill and Michael Gibbs, the former principal of Lanier High School will each be allowed to retain their teaching licenses in exchange for a period of probation and ethics training.  Cargill and Gibbs also agreed to testify in other cases involving grade changing at MPS schools.  The newspaper also reports that similar agreements are pending for three other educators. 

Hunting Trip

Sheriff's officials in west Alabama are investigating the death of a woman who was shot during a hunting trip.  Pickens County Sheriff David Abston said 29-year-old Heather Garner was killed when someone accidentally discharged a gun during a dove hunting trip on Saturday.  The sheriff said Garner and her friends were hunting south of Aliceville at the time of the hunting accident.
