Appeals court says state can't enforce new Ala. law

Montgomery, AL – A federal appeals court has agreed that
Alabama can't enforce a new state law aimed at public employee
groups while it is being challenged in court.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday left in place
the preliminary injunction that U.S. District Judge Lynwood Smith
issued in March. It blocks enforcement of a law that prohibits
payroll deductions for public employees who are paying membership
dues to groups that use the money for political activity. The
Alabama Education Association challenged the law.
The federal appeals court said Smith went too far when he also
ordered state officials to do payroll deductions for AEA's
political action committee.
House Speaker Mike Hubbard said he's optimistic the 11th Circuit
will eventually uphold Alabama's law.
