Alabama Receives Warning From Justice Department

The Justice Department has warned Alabama that it is not complying with federal voter registration laws which were enacted to make it easier to register to vote.  In September, a Justice Department official warned Attorney General Luther Strange that a lawsuit is pending because the state has not complied with the Motor Voter Act of 1993.  Governor Bentley said he's confident the matter will be worked out.  

Mayors Endorse Roby

Republican Congresswoman Martha Roby has secured endorsements for re-election from 36 mayors in the Second Congressional Districts.  Roby said in a statement issued Tuesday that she's grateful for the show of support.  Roby faces a challenge from Wetumpka Tea Party activist Becky Gerritson in next year's Republican primary.  

Tourist Attraction

Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford is leading an effort to attract more tourists to ten historic black towns and settlements that have ties to Booker T. Washington.  At a news conference Tuesday, Ford said two nationally known consultants will assist the towns seek funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a national historic black towns and settlements trail.  The ten towns are located in Alabama, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, Texas and North Carolina.  

Dunn Withdraws

Former Alabama Public Service Commissioner Terry Dunn says he has changed his mind and will not run for president of the regulatory agency.  Dunn sent out a statement Monday saying he will not seek the office.  As a member of the PSC, Dunn had unsuccessfully pushed for formal hearing on the rates charged by Alabama Power.  Dunn, a Republican, said he believes the PSC needs to do a better job of protecting consumers.
