Alabama Counties Issuing Licenses to Gay Couples

Some Alabama counties have started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage.  A supervisor in Mobile County's probate court, Russ Davidson, said the court issued its first same-sex marriage license to two women today after months of refusing to sell marriage licenses to anyone.  Moral Law Foundation Executive Director Matthew Kidd says the ruling dismantles traditional marriage.  Writing the majority opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy said couples seeking the right to marry should not have to wait for the political branches of government to act.  Kennedy says nothing in the 5-4 ruling would force religions to perform or condone weddings to which they object.

Attempted Murder

Two Selma teenagers have been arrested by Selma Police accused of brutally assaulting a 21-year-old man.  Selma Police Lt. Curtis Muhannad tells the Selma Times-Journal 19-year-old Corey Rabb and 18-year-old Derrick Washington each face a charge of attempted murder stemming from the June 16th incident.  Muhannad says the two teens were friends with the victim and lured him from his home and began beating him, allegedly stomping on his head so hard that he suffered a dislocated jaw.  The victim's mother took him to a hospital.

Order Challenge

The state is taking the first step to challenge a judge's order against the shutdown of the VictoryLand casino in Macon County.  The attorney general's office filed a notice of appeal in the case Friday.  The state will fight a ruling by Circuit Judge William Shashy.
