Murder on July Fourth in Montgomery

   Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a Montgomery woman from Wednesday. According to a department release, 24 year old Octavius Hampton has been charged with murder in the case. He is said to have shot his girlfriend, 20 year old Charlayne Washington in the 3-thousand block of Southmall Circle Wednesday afternoon. She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Hampton has been placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility under a 150-thousand dollar bond. 

Investigators say the shooting sprang from a dispute between the two.

   Alabama just landed its highest rank ever in the Kids Count Data Book - which measures child well-being across the country – however it still lags behind most states. Alabama came in at number 42 in the annual report. The data book uses 16 indicators to come up with its rankings. One area of strength for the state is the number of teenagers in the country who abused alcohol or drugs. Alabama had the fewest of any other state at 4 percent. The state also ranked second nationally with only 2 percent of all children lacking access to health insurance.

Mighty Marching Hornets raising money for trip

   A major fundraiser is taking place at Alabama State University. ASU’s Mighty Marching Hornets Band will be performing in the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. Funds are needed for that endeavor, so boosters of the band are asking alumni, supporters and members of the public to make contributio

  Governor Kay Ivey is warning that Alabama’s auto industry could be harmed if tariffs are imposed on U-S goods around the world. In a departure from President Donald Trump on the issue of trade, Ivey says import tariffs like those supported by the president would hurt the state. She asserts that import duties could cause retaliatory tariffs that would increase the cost of items made in Alabama and sold in other countries.

November 14,2008 – Alabama congressman Artur Davis is up in arms over a panel formed by the Alabama Democratic Party to recommend federal appointees for President- elect Barack Obama. Davis says the panel has no legitimacy, but party officials disagree.

November 12,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis says the rumors are just that, rumors, and he is not considering serving as U.S. Attorney General. Davis says he will announce early next year definitive plans on whether he will run for Governor of Alabama. On another note, Davis will participate in an upcoming Time magazine panel discussion this weekend about the publication's "Person of the Year".

November 11,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis tells WVAS news he will have an announcement to make early next year. That response when we questioned Davis about reported plans to run for Governor. Selma based Zeigler is recalling its more than 28,000 pounds of hot dogs fearing contamination. Zeigler officials say the hot dogs produced on September 22nd may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause a potentially deadly disease called Listeriosis.

November 7,2008 – Stories making Headlines this hour in the WVAS Newsroom: President Elect Barack Obama prepares to speak to the nation via his first news conference since Tuesday. WVAS news will carry his comments live beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Montgomery Police Officer injured in a robbery shooting Wednesday remains in stable condition this morning. Meanwhile, three of the suspects in the robbery are charged with murder in connection with the death of a fellow robbery suspect.

November 6,2008 – From the WVAS Newsroom, our top story this hour: A Montgomery Police Officer is hospitalized in stable condition following a shooting overnight in North Montgomery. Police were called to a home on North Pass Road with reports of a home invasion robbery around 7:30 last night. Shots were fired, and reportedly three people were injured, with an unidentified Montgomery Police Officer listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

November 6,2008 – Our top story this hour: Montgomery Police have three men in custody and a fourth suspect is dead in connection with the shooting overnight that sent a Montgomery Police Officer to the hospital. The unidentified Police Officer, according to police spokesman Lt. Keith B. Barnett, is listed in stable condition.

November 4,2008 – Record voter turnout predicted for today's election cycle; so far,no reports of any major problems at the polls. The Secretary of State's Office predicts Alabama will break its old turnout record of 76 percent set in the 1992 presidential race.
