State Senator Hank Sanders bowing out of race

   Longtime Democratic state senator Hank Sanders announced Saturday that he will not run for re-election. Sanders has served nine terms in the state senate and had qualified to run for office this year. But, in a statement, The Selma senator said recent time with family made him realize it was time to back away. He said he has asked his daughter Malika Sanders-Fortier to qualify and run for the Senate District 22 seat and she has agreed. Sanders does plan to serve out the almost nine months left in his term.

Every Thursday on WVAS, we will bring you the latest restaurant health inspection scores from the Montgomery County Department of Public Health. This week the department conducted a total of 63 inspections of food service and lodging establishments. Visit the Montgomery Health Department’s website for a full list of scores.

Nearly 50 miles of road will be resurfaced in Montgomery County over the next 12 months. Montgomery County officials say the project will fix aging roadways in Pike Road and throughout the county. County Assistant Engineer Kevin Boone says the road improvement is the largest project the county has undertaken in a 12-month period. The improvements will cost $11 million total, with the bulk of the funding coming from federal money and the remaining in county money.

   Legislators got their first look at the proposed state education budget yesterday during a meeting of the House Ways and Means Education Committee. The 6.7 billion dollar spending plan is one of the largest in state history. Interim State Schools Superintendent Ed Richardson calls it an excellent budget.

Millbrook man arrested in child porn video

   The man suspected of criminal sexual misconduct in a child porn video has been taken into custody. Central Alabama CrimeStoppers reports that 44 year old Germaine Moore turned himself in to police around 2:30 this morning. The Millbrook man faces 11 counts of sexual misconduct related to a video that has been distributed nationally and globally, depicting him in a sex act with a child under the age of 13. Later today, Moore will be transported to the Elmore County Detention Facility. He is also wanted in Detroit on sexual assault charges of three girls.

November 12,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis says the rumors are just that, rumors, and he is not considering serving as U.S. Attorney General. Davis says he will announce early next year definitive plans on whether he will run for Governor of Alabama. On another note, Davis will participate in an upcoming Time magazine panel discussion this weekend about the publication's "Person of the Year".

November 11,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis tells WVAS news he will have an announcement to make early next year. That response when we questioned Davis about reported plans to run for Governor. Selma based Zeigler is recalling its more than 28,000 pounds of hot dogs fearing contamination. Zeigler officials say the hot dogs produced on September 22nd may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause a potentially deadly disease called Listeriosis.

November 7,2008 – Stories making Headlines this hour in the WVAS Newsroom: President Elect Barack Obama prepares to speak to the nation via his first news conference since Tuesday. WVAS news will carry his comments live beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Montgomery Police Officer injured in a robbery shooting Wednesday remains in stable condition this morning. Meanwhile, three of the suspects in the robbery are charged with murder in connection with the death of a fellow robbery suspect.

November 6,2008 – From the WVAS Newsroom, our top story this hour: A Montgomery Police Officer is hospitalized in stable condition following a shooting overnight in North Montgomery. Police were called to a home on North Pass Road with reports of a home invasion robbery around 7:30 last night. Shots were fired, and reportedly three people were injured, with an unidentified Montgomery Police Officer listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

November 6,2008 – Our top story this hour: Montgomery Police have three men in custody and a fourth suspect is dead in connection with the shooting overnight that sent a Montgomery Police Officer to the hospital. The unidentified Police Officer, according to police spokesman Lt. Keith B. Barnett, is listed in stable condition.

Dr. Howard Robinson is a Historian and Archivist for the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African American Culture at Alabama State University who believes the historical aspect of the election will resonate for quite while ,especially in the South.

November 4,2008 – Record voter turnout predicted for today's election cycle; so far,no reports of any major problems at the polls. The Secretary of State's Office predicts Alabama will break its old turnout record of 76 percent set in the 1992 presidential race.
