State Senator Hank Sanders bowing out of race

   Longtime Democratic state senator Hank Sanders announced Saturday that he will not run for re-election. Sanders has served nine terms in the state senate and had qualified to run for office this year. But, in a statement, The Selma senator said recent time with family made him realize it was time to back away. He said he has asked his daughter Malika Sanders-Fortier to qualify and run for the Senate District 22 seat and she has agreed. Sanders does plan to serve out the almost nine months left in his term.

Nearly 50 miles of road will be resurfaced in Montgomery County over the next 12 months. Montgomery County officials say the project will fix aging roadways in Pike Road and throughout the county. County Assistant Engineer Kevin Boone says the road improvement is the largest project the county has undertaken in a 12-month period. The improvements will cost $11 million total, with the bulk of the funding coming from federal money and the remaining in county money.

   Legislators got their first look at the proposed state education budget yesterday during a meeting of the House Ways and Means Education Committee. The 6.7 billion dollar spending plan is one of the largest in state history. Interim State Schools Superintendent Ed Richardson calls it an excellent budget.

Millbrook man arrested in child porn video

   The man suspected of criminal sexual misconduct in a child porn video has been taken into custody. Central Alabama CrimeStoppers reports that 44 year old Germaine Moore turned himself in to police around 2:30 this morning. The Millbrook man faces 11 counts of sexual misconduct related to a video that has been distributed nationally and globally, depicting him in a sex act with a child under the age of 13. Later today, Moore will be transported to the Elmore County Detention Facility. He is also wanted in Detroit on sexual assault charges of three girls.

November 24,2008 – Gas prices continue to drop just in time for Thanksgiving motorists who will be hitting the roadways this week. AAA Alabama is reporting Monday's fuel prices ringing up at 1.87 per gallon statewide.

Alabama Democrats are pushing to eliminate the state's 4 percent sales tax on groceries.


Gasoline prices around the state continue to tumble with AAA Alabama reporting prices being cut in half since the record $4.00 per gallon mark back in July.

November 20,2008 – It's a sad reflection of the economy; more people are losing their homes to foreclosure in Alabama. Attorney Jim Smith works with the Mortgage Foreclosure Task force which offers free assistance to residents. He says most residents are unaware that they can lose their homes in as little as 21 days. November 19,2008 – Montgomery resident, Brent Springford, Jr. , has plead guilty in the beating deaths of his. Springford was charged in the Thanksgiving 2004 murders of his parents, Winston and Charlotte Springford, both 62. Even though Springford plead guilty to five counts of capital murder in the case, he must still stand trial on December 3rd.

November 18,2008 – It's cold and Flu season, and public health officials are encouraging residents to take precautions and get their Flu shots. The Alabama Department of Public Health reports on average, 226,000 people are hospitalized each year nationwide because of Influenza.

November 17,2008 – Alabama Senator Richard Shelby plans to fight a Democratic proposal to bail out U. S. automakers to the tune of 25 BILLION dollars. Shelby, who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, says such a bailout would only postpone the inevitable.

November 14,2008 – Alabama congressman Artur Davis is up in arms over a panel formed by the Alabama Democratic Party to recommend federal appointees for President- elect Barack Obama. Davis says the panel has no legitimacy, but party officials disagree.

November 13,2008 – Consumers are enjoying lower gas prices with regular unleaded gasoline at its lowest amounts around the state since 2006. AAA Alabama is offering tips to get the best mileage possible.

November 12,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis says the rumors are just that, rumors, and he is not considering serving as U.S. Attorney General. Davis says he will announce early next year definitive plans on whether he will run for Governor of Alabama. On another note, Davis will participate in an upcoming Time magazine panel discussion this weekend about the publication's "Person of the Year".
