Gas Prices

Montgomery, AL – An early Christmas present for drivers as gasoline prices are down again this week. According to Triple-A, the statewide average for regular unleaded is almost $1.58 a gallon Monday. Nationally, regular fuel averaged $1.66. Triple-A Alabama said motorists are paying, on average, $1.68 for midgrade and $1.73 for premium. The average national price of gasoline fell 9 cents in the past two weeks, bringing it to its lowest point since 2004.

Fraternity gives back

Montgomery, AL – The Montgomery chapter of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity brought an early Christmas celebration to more than 80 underprivileged children Saturday as part of their mission to uplift their community. The festivities at the Omega Center on South Court street included a visit from Santa, a large table of food and more than 200 toys packed under a large tree. Sam Jeter, who pledged in 1975, said the annual event is a great time for them to get together as members and give back to the less fortunate.

The suit was filed back in July because Riley used a line item veto to remove language that the Legislature put into the new General Fund budget that shields some health and social service programs from budget cuts in the face of proration.

Montgomery, Alabama – Local Economics Professor, Dr. Kevin Deravi, says that the average citizen won't feel relief from recent cut to the key interest rate. The Federal Reserve Tuesday slashed the interest rate to 0.25 percent. Dr. Deravi tells WVAS news that it will take quite some time before the average consumer feels the cut.

December 16,2008 – State officials are beginning work to implement budget cuts. This after Governor Bob Riley announced proration of the Education budget by 12.5 percent and an across the board cut in state government spending, including a hiring freeze. The declaration of proration was the result of lagging sales tax collections.
