Employment Centers remain open during holiday

Montgomery, Alabama – While many state employees are enjoying a day off on this President's Day, workers at Alabama's Employment Centers are reporting for duty.

Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees says residents may call in or visit on line if they are seeking jobs and/or unemployment compensation. The number to call is -866-234-5382. The website address is www.dir.alabama.gov.

Alabama's unemployment rate is 6.7 percent;it is the highest rate in more than 15 years.

Former Riley Staff to Oversee Stimulus Spending in Alabama

Montgomery, Alabama – Alabama is on tap to receive money from the economic stimulus plan, while the amount that each state will receive has not been finalized, Governor Bob Riley has decided who will oversee Alabama's spending of the money.

The governor is paying $195 per hour through an emergency contract for Drayton Nabers and David Perry, both attorneys with a Birmingham law firm, for two months of work.

Nabers was Riley's state finance director from 2003 to 2004. Perry was an assistant finance director in 2003-2004.

Montgomery Police Make Multi-million Dollar Drug Bust

Montgomery, Alabama –
Montgomery Police say that on Tuesday officers working in the area of Interstate 85 North near the Mitylene exit saw something suspicious on a tractor trailer rig.

Officers pulled the rig over and made one of the departments largest drug busts ever.

Officers with the Crime Reduction Team confiscated $10 million dollars worth of powder cocaine. Police say getting it off the streets is significant because it prevents further criminal acts.

Alabama Legislature's Calendar

Montgomery, Alabama – MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama
Legislature on Wednesday, a committee meeting day:
COMMITTEES
-Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee discussed the
governor's proposed education budget, but took no action on it.
-Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee approved bills to allow
stronger beers and wines to be sold in Alabama. Go to Senate.
-Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee approved a bill that
would allow the city councils in 14 cities to schedule referendums

Schools Prepare to Close

Montgomery,Alabama – Montgomery Public Schools officials are beginning the work of moving students and teachers from three local schools after voting to close them because of budget problems.

At the end of the school year, over -700- students from Hayneville Road, Paterson, and Pintala elementary will be moved to neighboring schools. More than 100 employees will be moved to positions that are available in surrounding schools.
