Mayoral Candidates Square off in Public Forums

Montgomery, Alabama – The men who would be mayor of Montgomery will be busy with two different debates scheduled for tonight.

One mayoral debate is scheduled to be held at the McIntyre Community Center from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Another debate is scheduled at Flowers Hall at Huntingdon College tonight beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Looking ahead to Thursday night, a debate is scheduled at First Baptist Church in downtown Montgomery from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Alabama's Secretary of State Ponders Race for Lt. Governor

Montgomery, Alabama – MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Secretary of State Beth Chapman says
she's seriously considering running for lieutenant governor in
2010.
Chapman says she will make a decision by June 1 on whether to
enter the Republican race. If she doesn't, she says she will seek a
second term as secretary of state.
The former chairman of the political science department at the
University of Alabama, William Stewart, says Chapman would be a
formidable candidate because of her experience in state government

Employment Centers remain open during holiday

Montgomery, Alabama – While many state employees are enjoying a day off on this President's Day, workers at Alabama's Employment Centers are reporting for duty.

Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees says residents may call in or visit on line if they are seeking jobs and/or unemployment compensation. The number to call is -866-234-5382. The website address is www.dir.alabama.gov.

Alabama's unemployment rate is 6.7 percent;it is the highest rate in more than 15 years.
