Montgomery, Alabama – Four area high school students are receiving a high honor; the Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School, or LAMP, has students who are among 16 students in the state to earn National Achievement Scholarships.
Those honors go to 17 year old Ahmad Jackson, 17 year old George Okeowo, 17 year old Jenae Steele and 18 year old Anthony Todd.
The recognitions are doubly sweet for the school because LAMP is the only high school in Alabama to have multiple students earn National Achievement Scholarships.
Dothan, Alabama – (AP) - Police in Dothan are searching for a serial rapist. Police Chief John Powell says DNA evidence returned last week from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences shows a match in DNA collected from three rapes in Dothan over the past 18 months. There have been no arrests. Police Capt. Steve Parrish says the most recent rape for which the suspect has been matched occurred in May 2008. The victims in all three cases did not appear to know their attacker.
Montgomery, Alabama – MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gasoline prices across Alabama jumped 14 cents in the past four weeks, but remain well below last year's prices. A survey by AAA Alabama Monday showed the average statewide price for regular was $1.95 a gallon. The national average was $2.05. The auto club said midgrade fuel averaged $2.08 and premium cost $2.14 a gallon. A survey of metro prices finds Huntsville with the highest price for regular at $1.96. Montgomery, Alabama – Montgomery Police make a big find during a routine traffic stop. Police stopped the driver of a tractor trailer recently for driving 62 miles per hour in a 50 miles per hour zone on Interstate 85 recently.
Police dogs sniffed out a suspicious package that contained $345,915. Police questioned the driver about the money; but he claimed he did not know how it got there.
Police released the driver but kept the money. Police say that at some point the money must have been in contact with illegal drugs, and that's why the K-9 Unit found it.
Montgomery, Alabama – MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Officials at Mobile-based International Shipholding Corp. are monitoring the piracy incident off the coast of Somalia closely. The vessel is owned by Maersk USA and leased to International Shipholding, under what is known as a bareboat charter. The firm says it has had such relationships with Maersk for the past three to five years. Pirates took Capt. Richard Phillips as a hostage after an attack on the M/V Maersk Alabama on Wednesday. A standoff continues.
Birmingham,Alabama – (AP) - State Rep. Earl Hilliard Junior said Monday he would seek the 7th District congressional seat once held by his father, who in 1992 became Alabama's first black congressman since Reconstruction. The 39-year-old Hilliard announced his campaign for the Democratic nomination during a downtown kickoff attended by supporters including his father, Earl Hilliard Sr. The younger Hilliard, a lawyer and independent filmmaker, said he would be "my own man" as he tries to combat the crushing
