I'm Michel Martin and this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News. Coming up, the president of Gambia has held power there for nearly 20 years. In that time, he's been criticized for being erratic and corrupt, but now critics say he's become a killer. He's announced he's going to summarily execute every prisoner on death row there in a matter of weeks. We'll try to find out more about him and what this is about from an exiled journalist who knows him and the country well. That's later in the program.

Gambia Leader Vows To Execute Death Row Prisoners

Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh recently ordered the executions of all 47 prisoners on death row. Nine have been killed so far. The news comes decades after the last execution was ordered in that country. Host Michel Martin discusses the political situation in Gambia with Pa Nderry Mbai. He's a Gambian journalist living in exile in North Carolina.

In her convention speech, Ann Romney talked about the role of women in America. Host Michel Martin caught up with Rep. Marsha Blackburn before the speech. Blackburn says the concerns of women voters were key in drafting the Republican platform. She co-chairs the GOP platform committee, and heads the Women's Policy Committee in the House.
