Montgomery, Alabama – Local Economics Professor, Dr. Kevin Deravi, says that the average citizen won't feel relief from recent cut to the key interest rate. The Federal Reserve Tuesday slashed the interest rate to 0.25 percent. Dr. Deravi tells WVAS news that it will take quite some time before the average consumer feels the cut.

State Senator Hank Sanders of Selma is proposing lawmakers consider a gambling tax to help the state's ailing education budget. Senator Sanders and Representative Richard Lindsey chair the legislature's education budget committees. They say a gambling tax is a way to help the prorated state education budget without adding any consumer tax.

Blount County Sheriff Danny Morton is stepping down next month in exchange for the state ending its investigation into sexual misconduct with a female deputy. A special prosecutor for the Attorney General's Office says no charges will be referred to a grand jury. A deputy filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in April. The deputy accuses Morton of forcing her to
drink alcohol with him and another deputy, Jon Faust, while on duty in March. He then allegedly fondled and kissed the woman against her will.

Motorists can expect extra patrols and sobriety checkpoint statewide during the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Public Safety Director Christopher Murphy said troopers will focus on curtailing impaired driving. The sobriety checkpoints begin today.
