December 12,2008 – Next week, Governor Bob Riley is expected to officially declare proration and set out the amount of cuts that education will face. Once the Governor officially calls for proration, the move will free up about $437 million dollars from a rainy day fund to shore up the education budget.

Alabama Republican Senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions voted to reject a $14 billion emergency bailout for U.S. automakers. The proposed legislation collapsed in the Senate after the United Auto Workers refused to give in to Republican demands for wage cuts.

Leaders of the state Senate's Republican Caucus say their priority for the upcoming legislative session is to phase out the state's 4 percent sales tax on groceries. The GOP leaders say they hope to do away with the food tax gradually without raising other taxes.
