The term of Barbara Thompson as Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent has come to an end.  The Board of Education accepted a mutual separation agreement with Thompson at a special called meeting.  The embattled superintendent did not address the panel.  Thompson had recently been under increasing pressure from a state investigation into improper grade-changing at some schools in the system.  She had been Montgomery's Superintendent since July 2009.  Margaret Allen has been named interim Superintendent. 

One Place Family

The One Place Family Justice Center in Montgomery was awarded a federal grant of $899,994 dollars, Mayor Todd Strange gave $6,000 for a grand total of $900,000 dollars.  The money will be used to expand the order of protection database to 40 counties in Alabama.  The One Place Family Justice Center is a one-stop shop where domestic violence victims can get help. 

Dogfighting Ring

Animal welfare officials say they have rescued 16 more pit bulls during an investigation into a dogfighting ring that spanned several Southeastern states.  Al.com reports that Demontt Allen of Houston and Sandy Brown of Brownsville surrendered the dogs.  The animals have been taken to a temporary shelter in an undisclosed location. 

Healthcare Marketplace

Alabamians who are able to get into the new health insurance marketplace website aren't finding much choice.  Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is the only insurance company offering individual plans in most counties.
