Montgomery Police say a stabbing victim has died. Officers responded to a residence on Rainbow Road around 8:30 p.m. where they found 30-year-old Zamian Land suffering from a stab wound. He later died at Baptist Medical Center South. MPD said a suspect was detained and charges are pending. Land's death is the city's 39th homicide this year.
In a separate criminal case, a 21-year-old woman is behind bars charged with domestic violence in connection with a shooting late Monday morning that left an adult male injured. Montgomery Police said Tireka Davis is accused of shooting the unnamed male at the Jackson Square Apartment off East Boulevard. Authorities said the man's wound was not life threatening. Davis was being held in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on a $30,000 dollar bond.
Identity Theft
Federal prosecutors continue to pursue individuals for identity theft and tax fraud. U.S. Attorney George Beck said Monday that Nakia Jackson of Montgomery has been charged with conspiracy to file false tax returns, theft of public funds and aggravated identity theft. The feds contend that between January 2009 and March 2011 Jackson conspired with several people to file false tax returns using stolen identities, some of which she allegedly obtained from a state employee. No trial date was announced for Jackson.
Drug Arrests
More than 40 people in north central and west Alabama have been arrested on drug distribution charges as part of an operation by federal officials to take heroin dealers off the streets. U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance in Birmingham says those arrested were among 50 people indicted on charges related to trafficking of heroin. Vance says the arrests show that heroin is becoming a major problem.
