WVAS Local News

People from across the nation, including Alabama, will gather at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Saturday to pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.  as the March on Washington marks its 50th year.  Alabama State University Archivist Dr. Howard Robinson believes the gathering renews the fight over voting rights.  The Reverend Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III will hold an event on Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial.  President Obama will speak on the actual anniversary day next Wednesday.

Flat Enrollment

Alabama's public schools are not seeing an exodus of students taking advantage of private school tax credits.  State Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice told the state school board Thursday that preliminary survey data shows 51 students have used the new Alabama Accountability Act.  Bice said not all school systems have responded to a department survey, but he doesn't expect the figure to increase much because the state's largest systems have responded.  Of the 51 transfers, 33 were in Montgomery County.

Color Day

This is the one day each year where crazy antics and colorful costumes are encouraged at the state Capitol.  Governor Bentley will be joined this afternoon by mascots from Alabama's public universities to promote the upcoming College Color Days.  The annual promotional event will take place on the Captiol's south lawn.  The governor says this year's College Color Days is scheduled for August 30th.  It's a day when Alabamians are encouraged to wear the colors of their favorite school.

Deadly Accident

State Troopers say an Elmore County man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 North Thursday morning.  Troopers said 68-year-old Jackie Faircloth of Eclectic was a passenger in an SUV which collided with a car near mile marker 218.  Faircloth was not wearing a seatbelt according to troopers.  The crash occurred just after 7 a.m. near Jemison.  The driver of the SUV, 67-year-old Patricia Faircloth McCain of Tallassee suffered serious injuries and was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
