The advocacy group, Alabama Arise, has accused Payday and Title Loan businesses of engaging in predatory lending. At a work session Tuesday, the Montgomery City Council discussed a proposed moratorium against Payday Loan stores. City Councilman Charles Smith is leading the effort. He said there are 89 such businesses in Montgomery and most concentrated along the Atlanta Highway.
New Business
The establishment formerly known as Rose Supper Club is getting new life as a Bar and Grill. At its Tuesday meeting, the Montgomery City Council approved a request to grant a lounge liquor license to a new owner. It will now be called Centennial Hill Bar and Grill. The Rose Supper Club's liquor license was revoked in January after five people were inured in a December 3rd shooting spree at the night club.
Selma Job Fair
Congresswoman Terri Sewell wants to address the high unemployment in Alabama's Black Belt counties. The Democrat who represents the 7th District, is sponsoring a major job fair today in Selma. Today's job fair at Wallace Community College runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Furlough Days
Defense officials say they will be able to ease the pain of mandatory, unpaid furloughs that civilian defense employees have had to bear for a month because of budgetary pressures. Civilians who'd been facing 11 unpaid days off will now have that number cut to six days. Officials say the Pentagon found enough savings in the final months of the current fiscal year to lessen the burden on those who have had to take a day off a week without pay since early July. Mandatory furloughs have impacted thousands of civilian workers at four military installations in Alabama.
