Supermarket chains Winn-Dixie and Bi-Lo are recalling some ground beef because of the risk that the meat has been contaminated with E.coli. The effort is part of a larger recall announced by the National Beef Packing Company. Fresh 93 percent Lean Ground Beef is being recalled from all stores in Alabama and four other Southern states. E.coli can cause diarrhea, dehydration and potentially kidney failure. No Gun Stickers Montgomery County Sheriff's officials say they've ordered about 3,000 stickers to distribute to area business owners who don't want people carrying guns into their establishments. Sheriff D.T. Marshall said business owners can place stickers on a sign or on their doors to indicate that guns are not allowed in their business. A new law went infor effect Thursday that prohibits employers from barring loaded guns from their properties as long as they're kept locked in a car. Marshall says hundreds of business owners have requested the stickers and he expects them to arrive at his office Monday. Comprehensive System The state Department of Education is planning to unveil its new way to address barriers to learning and teaching and to re-engage disconnected students. Department officials will join other educators today in Montgomery to present the Comprehensive System of Learning Supports design documents. Educators said the design moves student supports away form reacting to problems and moves them toward a system emphasizing prevention and early intervention. The department says 10 school districts will implement the design this fall. Other districts will be phased in over the coming years. Hyundai Sales The major autor companies, including Hyundai, reported robust sales in July. Hyundai Motor America said it sold more than 66,000 Sonata Sedans last month. That's 1,000 more vehicles than in June and a 6.4 percent increase over July of last year. Hyundai said close to 24,000 of its Elantra vehicles also sold in July. The Sonata and Elantra cars are manufactured in Montgomery. Child Rapist Jailed Police in Selma say a man wanted in connection with the sexual assault on a child is behind bars. Selma authorities said the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended Karl Mason in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 25th. Mason was returned to Selma on Wednesday to face charges of first degree rape of child which occurred on June 25th. Mason is being held in the Dallas County jail on a $250,000 bond. Back to School Sales Back to school bargains await throngs of shoppers eager to take advantage of Alabama's annual sales tax holiday weekend that began at midnight. The state's 4 percent sales tax is being removed and a record 281 cities and counties across the state are waiving their own sales taxes. The holiday ends at midnight Sunday.
