A fatal shooting overnight in north Montgomery is under investigation. Montgomery police said a man was hot to death just after 8 p.m. at a residence on Park Manor Drive in a domestic violence related incident. Lt. Regina Duckett said a suspect was taken into custody. The victim's name was withheld. Duckett said police have classified the shooting as a death investigation and not a homicide.
Ivey Indictment
A grand jury has indicted an elderly Montgomery woman accused in the beating death of her husband. The indictment alleges that 76-year-old Madie Ivey killed 77-year-old Dave Ivey on March 5th. Authorities said the victim was beaten with a broomstick in an apartment on Eastdale Road. The indictment was announced Wednesday. Madie Ivey will be arraigned on July 25th.
Public Apology
State Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead has asked Democratic state Senator Vivian Davis Figures of Mobile to apologize for saying she thought racism played a part in the recent dominance of Republicans in Alabama politics. Figures mad the remark at a meeting of the Over the Mountain Democrats on Tuesday. She said she believed that a constant anti-government, anti-Obama message from Republicans was racially motivated. But Armistead said that Republicans vote based on politics and not race. Senator Figures has been unavailable for comment.
Health Care Delay
It has no chance in the U.S. Senate, but House Republicans, including Alabama Congresswoman Martha Roby, have pushed through legislation that would delay core provisions of President Obama's health care law. The measure would push back the start date to obtain individual coverage to January 1st. And employers would be given a similar grace period. Wednesday's vote was the 38th time Republicans have tried to eliminate or undercut the law. Roby, who represents the 2nd Congressional District, has repeatedly sought to repeal the healthcare law.
Body Recovered
Search crews have recovered the body of a missing boater in west Alabama. Freddie Ingram, of Alabama Marine Police said the body of Christopher Averett in the Black Warrior River Wednesday morning. Authorities say the man was found a short distance from where he fell into the water. Ingram says a second boater was able to swim from the area, which is known for strong undercurrents. Officials say neither of the men who fell into the water was wearing a life vest.
Montgomery Advertiser
Robert Granfeldt Junior has been named president and publisher of the Montgomery Advertiser. Granfeldt comes to the newspaper from Southern Community Newspaper, where he was vice president of digital media and based in metro Atlanta. He replaces Sam Martin, who resigned earlier this year. Granfeldt's appointment is effective immediately.
Nelson Mandela
The health of former South African President Nelson Mandela is said to be getting better as he celebrates his 95th birthday Thursday. Mandela has been in critical condition with a recurring lung infection. Mandela's legacy will be celebrated Thursday at the Civil Right Memorial Center in downtown Montgomery. The center, located on Washington Avenue is offering free admission as part of its celebration.
