WVAS Local News

An upscale apartment complex to be built on the Eastchase shopping property has been given the green light.  The Montgomery City Council last night voted 6-3 to approve a controversial zoning change that clears the way for the 216 apartments to be constructed.  The zoning change was approved despite intense opposition from residents in surrounding neighborhoods.  Before the vote was taken, about a dozen residents were not allowed to address the city council.

Rallies Planned

Montgomery, Mobile and Birmingham are among the 100 cities where rallies are planned Saturday as part of a national "Justice for Trayvon" day.  The Reverend Al Sharpton said events at federal courthouses nationwide are mean to show that concerns about the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin are not going away.  The rallies will be sponsored in each city by the Ordinary People Society.  The march in downtown Montgomery will be held at noon Saturday at the federal courthouse.

Governor Dismissed

A federal judge has dismissed the governor and officials with three professional medical boards as defendants in a suit challenging a new Alabama law setting stricter regulations for abortion clinics.  Federal Judge Myron Thompson removed Governor Bentley as a defendant Tuesday based on an agreement by all parties.  Bentley's attorney maintained he had no role in enforcing the new law.  Planned Parenthood and the ACLU are challenging a part of the law that requires their doctors to have permission to admit patients to nearby hospitals.  The judge has put the law on hold temporarily while he considers the lawsuit.
