Members of Montgomery's religious community are getting involved in the fight against violent crimes. Montgomery Police have begun recruiting pastors and ministers to provide support to victims at crime scenes. The program called Operation Good Shepard will begin this summer. Montgomery Police said the program is modeled after a similar initiative in Dayton, Ohio. A session outlining the Good Shepard program will be held June 6th at Gateway Lodge on Davenport Drive at 6:30 p.m.
Inmate Homicide
Alabama prison officials say an inmate was stabbed to death at a prison in Bibb County. Authorities say 22-year-old Steven Edward Geiman was fatally stabbed in a fight with another inmate, 29-year-old William Gilchrist, Sunday evening at the Bibb County Correctional Facility. Geiman is at least the second Alabama prison inmate to be stabbed to death in a week. Another inmate, 54-year-old Anthony Jones, was stabbed to death during a fight at the Donaldson Prison in Bessemer on May 19th.
Teen's Guilty Plea
The Huntsville teenager accused in a fatal middle school shooting 3 years ago has pleaded guilty to murder. Hammad Memon appeared in Madison County Superior Court Montgomery and pleaded guilty in the death of 14-year-old Todd Brown. Brown was shot at Discovery Middle School in February 2010. His plea agreement includes a 30-year prison sentence, court costs and restitution to the victim's family and the state.
Legislative Bills
The end of this year's legislative session left several issues unresolved, and lawmakers say they're looking to revisit them during the next session. Democratic Representative John Knight says he'll look at again introduce a bill aimed at reducing or eliminating sales taxes on groceries. Some bills that are introduced annually only to die at the end of each session eventually do pass. This session saw the enactment of Caylee's Law, a bill that requires missing children to be reported promptly.
