The Education and General Fund budgets await consideration in the state Legislature.  Lawmakers have only three days before the end of 2013 regular session, expected to be May 20th.  In a recent speech on the Senate floor, Montgomery Democrat Quinton Ross pleaded with Senate leaders to begin debate on the school spending plan.  Lawmakers will return to the Alabama Statehouse Tuesday. 

Honoring Coretta Scott King

A rose honoring the late Coretta Scott King has been planted at Alabama's Capitol.  One of King's children, Bernice King, attended the rose planting ceremony over the weekend.  The Coretta Scott King is cream colored with touches of coral orange.  The rose also was planted last month at the King Center in Atlanta. 

Disaster Vote

A bill awaiting the governor's signature will make it easier for emergency worker to vote when they are called out because of a disaster.  The bill is the result of Alabama National Guardsmen and others being called to help after Hurricane Sandy hit the Atlantic coast shortly before last year's presidential election.  The bill provides that if a governor declares a state of emergency surrounding an election, Alabama's secretary of state can issue an emergency rule to allow workers responding to that emergency to fill out absentee ballots.  The state Senate gave final approval to the bill last Thursday. 

Bassmasters Elite Series

The nation's top bass anglers are headed to Montgomery this week for four days of competition.  The Capital city is the fifth stop on the Bassmasters Elite Series, it will feature 100 anglers competing from Thursday through Sunday, with daily weigh-ins along the Riverfront downtown.  Montgomery city officials estimate the bass competition will have a two million dollar economic impact. 

Copyright Lawsuit

The author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" has filed a New York lawsuit to re-secure the copyright to it.  Monroeville, Alabama, resident Harper Lee filed the lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan.  She seeks unspecified damages from a son -in-law of her former literary agent.  "To Kill a Mockingbird" won the Pulitzer for fiction.  The film version won three Academy Awards.
