A former Montgomery police officer has pleaded guilty to federal drug charges after being arrested in December for his involvement in a marijuana trafficking operation.  Lyvanh Rasavong appeared in court Thursday and faces a maximum of five years in prison.  Rasavong was caught delivering more than three pounds of high-grade marijuana from Montgomery to a house in Mobile County.  The Mobile County Sheriff's Office says Rasavong was also involved with a 16-acre marijuana growing operation that was shut down in Chunchula, about 20 miles northwest of Mobile.

MPS Meeting

A plan that would consolidate several central office sites was tabled Thursday by the Montgomery County Board of Education.  MPS Superintendent Barbara Thompson proposed the plan in an effort to save millions of dollars annually.  Dozens of parents attended the school board meeting and raised concerns Thompson's proposal to move the magnet schools into Lanier High School and shift Lanier students to Carver High School.  Its unclear if the consolidation plan will be discussed at the school board's next meeting on April 23rd.

The state Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice has called Wednesday's vote in a state Senate committee to repeal Common Core curriculum standards, "an unexpected detour."  Dr. Bice said despite the vote he remains committed to improving public education in all 67 counties.  Common Core has been adopted by 45 states, including the District of Columbia.
