A 19-year-old male is Montgomery's latest homicide victim.  Montgomery police said Jarvas Baldwin was shot to death Tuesday afternoon at a residence on Gaston Avenue.  Detectives said the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Christy Lawson was charged with murder.  Police said an initial inquiry indicated that shooting stemmed from an altercation that involved several people.  Baldwin's death is the city's 15th homicide of 2013.

Area Fires

A late night fire at an apartment complex near the old Montgomery Mall forced several people to flee their residences.  Montgomery firefighters responded to the Bridge Kroft Apartments just off South Boulevard.  Several apartments suffered extensive fire and smoke damage.  Firefighters said all the occupants escaped the fire and no one was injured.  How the fire stared remains under investigation.

In Opelika, a massive fire at the old West Point Stephens Pepperell Mill erupted last night just after 7 p.m.  Opelika Fire officials said units from Auburn and the East Alabama Fire Departments were called in to help control the blaze.  The cause of the fire is unknown.  The old West Point Pepperell Mill was shut down in 2008.

Prattville Woman Attacked

Police in Prattville say a suspect is in custody after he attacked a woman and stabbed her multiple times in the back.  The incident happened late Monday night about 10 p.m. at a convenience store on East Main Street.  Witnesses helped Prattville police nab 29-year-old Christopher Moses.  The suspect reportedly confessed to the stabbing and told officers where the knife was located, no motive was given.  The injured female was listed in stable condition at Prattville Baptist Hospital.  Moses was charged with attempted murder and was ordered held on a $100,000 dollar bond.

General Fund Budget

The Alabama Senate worked into the night to pass the budget to operate the state's non-education agencies.  The Senate voted 22-9 last night to approve the General Fund budget and send it to the House for further consideration.  Budget committee Chairman Arthur Orr said the $1.7 billion dollar budget follows most of the recommendations that Governor Bentley made when the legislative session began five weeks ago.  The budget does not include a cost-of-living raise for state workers.  The budget requires most state agencies to get by next year on the same amount they are getting this year.  Corrections and courts would get increases.

Pope Watch

An Alabama-based broadcasting operation is offering a different kind of new coverage for the election of a new pope.  Eternal Word Television Network in suburban Birmingham has sent about 50 employees to Rome for full coverage of the conclave of Catholic cardinals.
