Intruder Drills

Public schools across the state will now be required to conduct so called active shooter/intruder drills.  AL.com reports the resolution was approved by the State Board Thursday.  The training will be provided by the Alabama Department of Homeland Security.  The recommendations come after a week long hostage standoff in Dale County that involved a kindergarten student.  The resolution also comes in the wake of a mass shooting  at a school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Fake Police Officer

The search continues for a man who has been impersonating a police officer.  Police in Prattville said Thursday, the male suspect struck again when he tried to pull over a car on Fairview Avenue.  The white male was driving a white Ford Crown Victoria equipped with red and blue light on its dashboard, windshield and grill.  The vehicle did not have a car tag.  Prattville Police Chief Mark Thompson said he's unsure if the imposter is the same man who stopped a woman on Interstate 65 between Clanton and Prattville on February 5th.

Homemade Bombs Found

Police in Columbus, Georgia, say an east Alabama man is in custody on weapons charges after he was found with several homemade bombs and firearms.  Police stopped 42-year-old John Mullen of Opelika Wednesday night and found five hand-held, homemade explosives in his car.  Authorities say the bombs had fuses and contained shrapnel.  Columbus police says officers also found a grenade, several handguns, rifles and 1,000 rounds of ammunition in Mullen's car.  Mullen is being held in the Muscogee County, Ga.
