Members of Alabama's Congressional delegation either praised or criticized President Obama following his State of the Union address last night.  Mr. Obama spoke about jobs, guns, Afghanistan and other national interests GOP Congresswoman Martha Roby of Montgomery said the President is not serious about solving the nation's debt.  But Democrat Terri Sewell liked the President's call for bipartisanship.  Republican Senator Richard Shelby said Obama's plan would expand government and the creation of jobs.

Violence Against Women Act

In a show of bipartisanship, the U.S. Senate voted to renew the two decade old Violence Against Women Act with new provisions to ensure that gays and lesbians, immigrants and Native American women have equal access to the act's anti-domestic violence programs.  Alabama's two U.S. Senators were divided over the legislation, Richard Shelby voted yes while Jeff Sessions voted to reject the bill.  The Violence Against Women Act is credited with aiding millions of domestic violence victims and reducing domestic abuse in the U.S.
