Government consolidation and efficiency is on the agenda for the Alabama Senate.  Senate leaders said the work agenda today will include a bill to consolidate and reorganize the more than 20 law enforcement programs.  Today is the first day the State Senate can pass any bills in the 2013 Session. 

No More Explosives

The FBI says bomb technicians have found no more explosives in wrapping up their search of the Dale County property of Jimmy Lee Dykes, the man who shot dead a school bus driver and held a boy in an underground bunker in Midland City for nearly a week.  SWAT team members killed Dykes Monday during a gunfight as officers rescued the kindergartner unharmed.  The boy named Ethan turned six Wednesday.  Federal agents said the body of 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes was removed from the underground bunker after bomb experts completed their work.  An autopsy is planned today in Montgomery. 

Police in Schools

Alabama House Democrats want to put an armed police officer in each of the approximately 1500 public schools in Alabama.  Representative Merika Coleman-Evans of Birmingham says the measure is aimed at preventing incidents like the recent school shootings in Connecticut. 

Black History

February is Black History month and the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University is presenting an art exhibit this weekend entititled, "United We Stand, A Civil Rights Retrospective."  The art exhibit opens Sunday afternoon at 3p.m. at the National Center at 1345 Carter Hill Road.  The images will be on display through May 31st.
