Montgomery firefighters were busy overnight.  Fire units responded to an apartment fire on Gas Light Curve last night around 9 p.m.  Fire Department officials said two apartments were heavily damaged, displacing two families.  There were no injuries. 

Another blaze overnight caused heavy damaged to a house in the 1400 block of Ferguson Street.  Three people inside the dwelling managed too escape unharmed.  The two residential fires remain under investigation. 

No Decision

There is still no decision regarding VictoryLand's application for a liquor license.  The Chairman of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control said the four member panel expects to rule within 15 days on the casino's request.  The panel concluded an all-day meeting about 5 p.m. Wednesday and Committee Chairman, Joe Adams said it will review mounds of evidence. 

Alabama Schools

The Alabama Board of Education will hold a work session today to discuss ways to keep Alabama schools safe.  The work session will be held at the Gordon Persons Building in downtown Montgomery.  Superintendent Tommy Bice has asked superintendents across the state to submit the safety plans for their schools in light of last month's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.  Some state lawmakers say they expect school safety to be a major issue in the upcoming session of the Legislature that starts February 5th. 

Senator Hinton Mitchem

Funeral arrangements are set for a long-serving member of the Alabama Legislature, former state Senator Hinton Mitchem of Union Grove.  Mitchem died Tuesday after a long illness.  He was 74.  Visitation will be Friday afternoon at Adams Funeral Home in Albertville.  The service will be at 2:00 Saturday afternoon at Moss Service Funeral Home in Cullman.
