Rivers are rising and flooding continues to be a threat as rain keeps falling across much of Alabama. A flood warning is in effect for most of western and northern Alabama, and a flood watch covers the rest of the region. The National Weather Service says as much as one inch of additional rain could fall today, increasing flooding problems since the ground already is saturated with water. Forecasters say snow is possible Thursday in north central Alabama, with light accumulations on grass.
Flu Shot
Public health officials continue to say it is not too late to get a flu shot, higher than normal levels of influenza continue to spread across the nation, including Alabama. State Health Officer, Dr. Don Williamson said there is an adequate supply of flu vaccine. Alabama public health officials say more than one million doses of flu vaccine were delivered to the state.
Call to Men
Alabama State University is partnering with One Place Family Justice Center to host an event this evening designed to engage young men in the prevention of domestic and sexual violence against women and girls. The "A Call to Men" inaugural event will be held tonight form 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the John Buskey Health Science Center. The event will feature a presentation by Ted Bunch, co-founder and co-director of " A Call to Men" followed by a panel discussion. The event is part of a national initiative to increase the participation of men to reduce domestic and dating violence against women and girls.
Montgomery Mall
The old Montgomery Mall on McGhee Road is a step closer to getting new tenants. The Montgomery City Council last night approved an ordinance allowing the Board of Education and a private company to share the property's parking lot and utility lines. The Montgomery County School Board has plans to use the former Parisian building to house a technical education center. In addition, the Montgomery Fire Department plans to put a fire station in the former Steve and Barry's store. The City Council delayed action on an ordinance that would allow a developer to build an apartment complex in the Taylor Lakes subdivision. Homeowners have been protesting the proposed project.
