WVAS Local News

Weather conditions are a mess across much of the state today.  School systems in ten counties across northwest Alabama opened late because of the threat of icy weather and flooding.  Forecasters say temperatures are around freezing in areas, creating the possibility of road icing after days of rain.  Also, flood watches cover the state's northwest and northeastern corners, along with the entire western section of the state from Birmingham to just north of Mobile.

Illegal Gambling

Alabama's attorney general will ask the Legislature to increase the penalty for operating illegal gambling machines.  Luther Strange said Monday that he wants the penalty to go from a misdemeanor to a felony.  He said the current penalty is a slap on the wrist compared to the large amounts of money that operators make.  Strange was in Hoover on Monday to talk to legislators about their upcoming regular session, which starts next month.

Homicide Investigation

Three Montgomery residents were found dead inside a car along Interstate 85 near Atlanta.  A police officer found two bodies in the car Sunday morning along an exit ramp in Union City, Georgia.  He then opened the trunk and found a third body.  They were identified as 32-year-old Cheryl Colquitt-Thompson, 33-year-old Quinones King and 43-year-old Rodney Cottrell.  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the case is being handled as a homicide.

Tuskegee Airmen

The final salute to one of the original Tuskegee Airmen has included a flyover by vintage aircraft.  It happened Monday during the funeral in Denver of Colonel Fitzroy "Buck" Newsum.  He was among the Tuskegee Airmen who trained in Alabama as a segregated unit of black pilots during World War II.  They went on to become one of the war's most respected fighter squadrons.  Newsum was 94.
