Along with most of the country, Alabama is reporting higher than normal levels of influenza. State Health Officer Dr. Don Williamson says this year's flu strain began earlier in the season and is widespread across the state. Dr. Williamson stresses that it is not too late to get a flu shot. He says the vaccine becomes effective about two weeks after receipt. The public is also reminded to practice basic infection control measures like washing hands, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve rather than the hands, and staying home when sick.
Life in Prison
A Montgomery man will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole. Circuit Judge Gene Reese sentenced 46-year-old Nevis Jennings for killing 52-year-old Julie Nelson of Deatsville in March 2011. Court records showed Nelson was found beaten and stabbed to death on Lemon Street. Prosecutors said Jennings, who was also convicted of arson, set fire to the victim's residence in an effort to destroy evidence. Judge Reese rejected Jennings' plea for leniency.
Free Concert
Local rock and blues bands will be hosting a free concert on Saturday to help raise money for Montgomery blues duo John Bull and Sheffield Walker. The men are participating in the International Blues Challenge, a five-day competition in Memphis, Tennessee. The money will be used toward paying for travel and lodging expenses. The concert is hosted by the City of Montgomery and the Alabama Roots Music Society. There is no admission, but attendees will be asked to make a donation. The event will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Union Station in downtown Montgomery.
NAACP Rally
The Alabama chapter of the NAACP will be hosting a rally Saturday in Montgomery supporting the Affordable Care Act. The demonstration will be held at noon at the Capitol in Montgomery.
