A liquor license for the VictoryLand Casino in Shorter tops the agenda at today's meeting of the Alabama Liquor Control agency.  The state ABC Board is scheduled to hold a hearing to determine if VictoryLand will get a license to serve alcohol.  Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange is opposing a license because he contends VictoryLand is operating illegal gambling machines.  But the casio's attorney Joe Espy has said the machines are legal electronic bingo.

Body Found

It was a sad ending in the search for a missing Wetumpka man.  Authorities in Elmore County found the body of 65-year-year-old William Hobbs late Wednesday morning in a pond near his home on Jasmine Hollow Road.  Hobbs had been reported missing Monday after leaving his residence for an appointment in Montgomery.  Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said the man apparently veered off the road and his pickup truck was found near the body.  Authorities do not suspect foul play in Hobb's death.

Governor Bentley

Governor Robert Bentley has become the first Alabama governor to serve as chairman of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.  The commission is an organization of 38 states involved in oil and natural gas production.    Bentley office announced that the commission is headed to Alabama for its midyear issues summit in May in Point Clear.

Violent Deaths Increase

A new government report finds the United States suffers far more violent deaths than any other wealthy nation, in part because of the prevalence of guns.  The U.S. has about six violent deaths per 100,000 people, while none of the 16 other countries surveyed came close to that ratio.  The report finds the U.S. also suffers relatively high rates of drug-related deaths and infant mortality.
