Severe Flu Season

Federal health officials say this flu season is shaping up to be one of the more severe in recent years.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says flu was widespread in 41 states, including Alabama, during the last week of December and flu-related child and infant deaths climbed to 18.  The CDC said the flu vaccine is well-matched to this year's strains.  He says it isn't 100 percent effective but does reduce the severity of the illness for those who come down with the flu.

Car Thefts

Don't leave your vehicle unlocked or running, that message comes from the Montgomery Police Department.  Officers say during the past three days, six motor vehicles have been stolen in the city when the owners left them unlocked and running to warm them up.  MPD recommends that the vehicle is not left unattended.  It only takes a matter of seconds for a would-be-thief to steal a vehicle.

Cancer Deaths Decline

Researchers say death rates from cancer are inching down.  The American Cancer Society's annual report on the disease finds cancer deaths among men dropped 1.8 percent a year between 2000 and 2009 and 1.4 percent a year among women.  The decline is due mostly to treatment advances and better screening for lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers.
